Gowmariamman Temple

Gowmariamman Temple is located in Veerapandi in the Theni district. This is under the control of the Department of Hindu Religious Affairs, Government of Tamil Nadu and is one of the many temples dedicated to Mariamman. Kaumari, an aspect of Shakti Devi, made a Shiva lingam and performed penance before defeating a monster in the dense forest on the banks of the Vaigai River. Knowing this, the monster tried to lift Kaumari. Realizing this by her wisdom, Kaumari took the nearby arugambulla and threw it towards him. The neighborhood formed a three-pronged force and split the monster in two. Seeing this, the gods sprinkled flowers from the sky. She named the Shiva lingam she worshiped “Thirukkannisuvar”. Veerapandian, the king of Pandya with Madurai as his capital, lost the sight of two eyes due to his influence. He went to many temples for his eyesight. One day Lord Shiva, who appeared in his dream, said that if he worshiped the penitent Kaumariamman at Veerapandi and then went to the Kannisuvaramudaiyar temple, he would get eyesight. Accordingly, the emperor came to this area and worshiped Kaumari and got the sight of one eye and the eye of the beholder worshiping the other eye. After that, he built a stone temple for Kannisuvaramudaiyar and a small alayam for Kaumariamman. In the Kannisuvaramudaiyar temple, there is a Kannisuvaramudaiyar and the accompanying goddess is a heroine who cultivates virtue. The people of the area are of the opinion that all the ailments will be cured for the worshipers of this temple which gave sight to the Pandya king.
